The House of Edward is called after Edward Anseele who played a big role in Ghent and Belgium in the 19th century.
Edward Anseele became active in the early socialist movement. He organized a cooperative bakery Vooruit which was founded in 1880. This was the start of a complete range of cooperative ventures which in the long term would create an industrial empire. This way, Anseele tried to create a counterweight to the capitalist ventures, and was able to provide support to workers' actions.
A man of the people, a Voice for the people.
But what will forever live in his memory is his morals and patriotism, when offered by the German invaders to become President of Belgium and abolish the kingdom, he refused. Because he was Belgian.
Edward Anseele's moment of patriotism lives in this Heirloom, to shine a light on a single moment of a beautiful history.
